Was it the norm at one point to put the rear brake below the chainstay? I don't think I have ever seen that on anything outside of a TT bike.

Back in the mid 80's a lot of mtb's had the break there horrid design but popular then

That placement offered big benefits as far as strength/lack of flex, but the drawback of clogging with mud could more than offset the benefit. They work fine in most conditions and I still ride bikes with them from time to time...
I had a Bridgestone MB-2 just like that until about one or two years ago. The non-original bars, and resultant shifters, on that one are 'interesting', to say the least...
Edit: Here's a pic of the one I used to have. I got it as a frame and fork with a few other parts and managed to find almost all the correct bits to put it back together.

Toe straps and all, that looks pretty clean cegrover! How did she ride? Thanks for the Sheldon Brown link too, it's nice to compare them to see what this owner did to change the bike.
