On April 28th, 2007 the Cotton Mill Preserve in Fayetteville, TN will be host to the inaugural Dirt Sweat & Gears. A weekend that is sure to be an epic gathering consisting of mountain biking, camaraderie and new horizons.

The headlining event for DSG is a solo and team relay 12 hour mountain bike race with a $10,000 purse up for grabs. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday and ending that night at 8 p.m. teams will compete for cash, prizes and best of all, bragging rights.

Reedly, Paddlechris, Darryl G., and I had the chance to ride this course and learn more about this event. What I can tell you is that this trail is really fun and that this event should be a really good time. This event should be part race, part festival, with vendors, food, drink, camping, and perhaps the addition of dirt jumping and even a trials competition. The huge purse will no doubt attract a few riders.

Check out the site below for more details.

All,

I just thought that I would offer an update on the Dirt, Sweat and Gears Race and Bike Festival.

Jeep has stepped up to the plate with a very generous offer to become a sponsor for this event. They are planning on making a big presence at the event and are not foreign to Mountain Biking as they have sponsored the Jeep King of the Mountain Series for the past couple years.

As I mentioned previously, USA Cycling has awarded DSG the South Eastern Region 12 Hour Mountain Bike Championship for 2007. They expect to post the updated calendar in the next couple of weeks.

The event purse of $10,000 has attracted a lot of attention among the pros and we have heard from are Tinker Juarez (Tinker will be available for a meet and greet on Friday before the race), Nat Ross, Deejay Birtch, and Monique Sawicki to name a few.

All participants will be automatically entered to win some pretty significant prizes such as:

A Lynskey Performance Level I Mountain Bike Frame from Harpeth Bikes and Lynskey.

A custom wheelset from Ligero Wheelworks.

We have also arranged for prizes and schwag from a variety of sponsors that includes such things as bike computers, wedge bags, socks, jerseys, GPS units, lights, sunglasses, hydration packs, pumps, CO2 kits, groupos, tires, etc... We expect to announce a few other prizes and raffle items in the next few weeks. Think bike frames and complete bikes!!! Our goal is that all participants leave with huge smiles and lots of gear.

The winner of the Amateur Solo Single Speed Class will win a Niner One Nine Frame from Black Sheep Cycles and Niner Bikes.

The schedule for the weekend is shaping up with camping, dinner and a movie under the stars on Friday night, a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, bike demos, a huge vendor village, a trials demonstration, two bands for the after party and awards presentation (featuring video of the race), etc...

Lot's more to come and a Huge Thank You to all who have contrubuted thus far. A special thanks goes to NMB for their support.

For more details, please visit: http://www.dirtsweatandgears.com

All I can say is WOW... sounds like this event will be much like the bigs one at the ski resorts. If you have never had the chance to see a national points series race, I wold encourage you to go.. even if you are not racing just to watch XC racers at that level makes you feel like you ride with training wheels..

Congrats Guys.. and if I can help let me know..

Chris,

You should look to enter this thing in the "corporate class". Up to ten riders. That means one lap a piece and plenty of time to just hang out and enjoy the day while still being entered to win some cool schwag.

Any group in here want to sign up for the corporate class.. one lap a piece sounds like fun..

and gives plenty of time for playing.. C

I'm definitely in for a team 12 hour at Dirt Sweat and Gears. Just out of curiosity, is there a team category, and also a group category? One being more for fun, and the other 'serious' teams, etc?? Or is it just that you can have a team of however many you want, up to the limit?

I'm really excited about this as team event, but I'm worried about losing everyone to the solo class, or even the 'fun-group' category, if indeed that's how it's broken down.

Curious, researching...

I'm in for the "serious" category. I was considering going solo, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I'm sure we can field several NMB teams with all the interest in this thread.

I am thinking about being a Race Worker. Would we be eligable for any prizes? I don't see me realistically racing at this one but still want a chance for some booty.

Also, what needs to be done at the race. I am getting a new camera and wanted to shoot a ton of pics, but me and little one would love to help out.

Is there a to do list, or sign up sheet or anything?

Steve

PS _ I might want to do the Winder Ga race on a team though :)

Caveman,

We would definately like some help. You should also consider riding this on a team. A team of ten means one lap per person. Figure about an hour per lap is pretty realistic.

The great thing about this event is that you can ride it to be super competitive, or you can ride it to simply have fun. I am planning on riding with a team and will probably get in just one lap early in the day prior to working the event.

Classes are as follows: two person, four person, five person co-ed, up to ten person, solo, solo ss...lots of choices here.

As Darryl mentioned, we will have a bunch more great prizes to announce in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Grant

Are there any teams set up yet. I saw that there are only 20 more days to preregister. Also, what was the SORBA discount - 20 bucks?

We need another Team NMB meeting to discuss this race and the one in Winder GA

Just thought I would clarify a few of the statements. As to whether or not the groups are fun or serious, they are all fun:)

All categories run three deep. The schwag will be the side of gravy whether or not you've won.

If you are a participant you are automatically entered in to the drawing for most of the goods. However, there are a few items that will go on the raffle block for a few bucks.

If you would like to volunteer, thanks in advance. Please send your contact info to: info@dirsweatandgears.com

A couple of us are coming down from Michigan for this race and looking forward to hopefully warmer weather. I signed up for solo class before they announced the National Ultra MTB series. I am now doing the Cohutta the week before this race so I may be interested in racing on a team instead. I would be interested in doing more than one lap though. Of course, I'm not sure how fast I'll be after Cohutta.

Good news for Dirt, Sweat and Gears as Nat Ross confirmed earlier this week that he will be riding this event. He told us that he is ready to "throw down with Tinker." It should be a great show to watch these two old friends duke it out on the course.

There is a $10 Sorba Discount. We actually built and distributed an email invitation outlining this discount be sent to all Sorba Members. This went out a month ago or so.

The Sorba tent is set-up for Sorba main and Mid-TN Sorba per our conversations with Darryl Glascock and the team. We'd like to have as much involvement as possible from all chapters. We want to do everything we can to offer the Sorba cause as much attention as possible at this event.

Just wanted to offer another update for the event. Check out Cyling News for a little more press for the race: http://www.cyclingnews.com/mtb.php?id=news/2007/jan07/jan25mtbnews

It's the 5th article down.

Also, I the schwag bag keeps growing as MOAB is teaming up with Ellsworth to offer a Moment Frame and maybe another extry special frame as well (think pink). MOAB will also be the exclusive sponsor of the Duo class at the event. Our friends at Sun and Ski haved teamed up with Haro to offer up two shiny new rides: a Mary SS and a Mary XC and will be the exclusive sponsor of the Solo class. If that's not enough, it sounds like our friends at Woodys may have a Gary Fisher on the table as well. Finally, Yazoo Brewing has just signed on as an event sponsor.

Add these to the prizes already on the table, and I'd say that this is an event not to be missed. Your entry automatically enters you to win these and many other prizes.

6 more days for early registration.

We can definately do that. In fact we've already done that sort of thing twice...one for a racer from D.C....she switched from solo to ss. Another option is to run this race duo. 1-2 laps per racer...a break of 1-2hrs...1-2 laps. Could be a good option to solo.

Anyway you or Kevin can offer up some lap times and average speeds for the course? That might be a good info. Nothing crazy, just cycling computer numbers. Length, time, average speed...

If not, I'll be sure to log this stuff on my next ride. I can offer a barometer for the slower end of the spectrum!

The timing for the event will be RFID and provide real time results for all participants. It will be great to compare times with Tinker, Nat, and the rest of the big dogs.

David,

Your namesake hill is wicked. It is one of those long steep grades that will test all but the strongest riders. By the time you near the top of the grade, most are pretty fried...the problem is that 20' from the top it gets steeper and requires a burst to get over. It is a really fun hill. I'm not suggesting that it is the biggest or ugliest thing I've ever ridden, but it definately leaves an impression.

Grant

David Moore
02-06-2007, 11:56 AM

putting in switchbacks will make it longer but should make it more manageable...probably a good idea for the sakes of the solo guys.

steves
02-06-2007, 03:46 PM
i will check my training log and post some times.

the switch backs were recently put in since the last group ride. it is easier than just climbing straight up but technical. once you exit the single track back on the road (climb) you still have a very small section of the hill to go up.

i feel sorry for you solo guys. i can't even imagine riding that course over 12 hours.

Steve is right on the money. This will be a challenging course. The closer we get the more excited I become. We are finalizing details on the schwag pile and roughly estimated we are at about $25,000in cash and prizes.

Our goal in planning this event was to create the sort of race that combined all of the best aspects of other events. The festival atmosphere with bike demos and vendor village. Live music, a movie under the stars, camping...combined with a really challenging race that will be seriously rewarding for all who come out to play.

I'm with Dave...Let's get this thing started already!!!

When should we submit our registration? Who will be riding on the 4 person team. After talking to Reed at the bike building party it sounded like himself, Danno, me, and (?) I will be able to register whenever you all are ready. I have a feeling I will be having to ride the Mt. Bike training video at least 4 days a week to get in shape for this one.

If there are different plans for teams and who will be riding feel free to post up, but I am positive I would like to race.:goteam: :thumb:

A Big Thanks to Princeton Tec Lights. I just received word that Princeton Tec will be offering their high end lighting products to the schwag collection and as prizes at DSG.

We have not ironed out the details, but we may be setting up a night ride of the course on Friday night before the event. Might be a fun opportunity to pre-ride the course and demo some great lighting equipment.

All,

I figured it might be time for an update on DSG.

Today we confirmed Clif Bar as a sponsor. We also got a look at the really cool Swift Wick socks that are part of every racer's kit. Thanks to Hincapie Designs, the DSG jerseys also look really good.

The Pro field is really filling out. today we confirmed Monique "Pua" Sawicki will be riding at DSG. In case you have not heard, Pua is one fast rider as evidenced by her results at the 12hrs of Temecula where she beat the entire field (both male and female) on her way to setting a new course record.

We have also confirmed that our friends at Team Ergon will be bringing grips to offer demo's on Friday April 27th. Princeton Tec lights will also be offering a demo opportunities the night before the race as well as will be setting up to rent lights to any racers in need of a little illumination at DSG.

Stay tuned...More to come as we continue to add to the over $25K in cash and prizes!!!

Thanks,

All,

We had a visit from a couple great folks at Dirt Rag Magazine this weekend. Karl (a web editor for Dirt Rag) and Carol (an avid Single Speeder and super strong rider who is riding the race solo) spent a couple days checking out the course and interviewing for an article on the race. We also took the time to show off the trails at CT and Hamilton Creek (Thanks Reed and Sharp!).

All told, it was a great weekend and a real treat to share a few of our great local trails. We spent some time describing the local MTB scene and discussing the efforts of Sorba and our biking community in general. I think they left with a good impression of our area and are looking forward to the race at DSG.

Karl and Carol had great things to say about the trails in the area and were stoked to get out of the snowy Pittsburg weather for three days of balmy weather in the greater Nashvegas area.

In other news, it looks like the great folks at Hoss Technical Gear are going to step up with some great schwag for the race. More cool stuff for the riders to walk away with. Thanks Hoss!

Sign ups for the race are definately picking up and we are wondering if we might even have to cap the field...

Check out this page for updates on the prizes available to all riders who enter:
http://www.dirtsweatandgears.com/?page_id=21/

Remember, Every Rider is eligible to win these prizes simply for entering the race!

The trail will be open for pre-riding this coming Saturday March 17th. Come on down.

For those of you who are geographically challenged and are not able to come down and preview the course (and pick out your spot). I've got a wicked clear aerial (http://www.dirtsweatandgears.com/media/photos/DSG_course_aerial.jpg)posted so that you can get a good idea of what the grounds look like.

BTW - We've had a few hiccups with the GPS that have hindered our progress on the high-powered mapping. We could have used the handheld type to get the job done, but I didn't feel that that was adequate. I promise the course map with aerial underlay and topo overlay will knock your Swiftwicks off!

For now enjoy the view.

Well we are getting close to the race day and I thought I'd offer an update.

Water is in for the event as we've done a little plumbing at the site. We will also be driving in some really fancy Jeeps, courtesy of Favetteville Dodge Jeep, to ogle over around the race grounds. Also plan on a mini airshow from a group of radio controlled flying folks who plan on taking to the air on race day. Sounds crazy I know, but these folks have radio controlled Jets and Helicopters that do some amazing stuff.

Big thanks to xtanker for arranging the efforts of Vandy's Sport's Medicine team to be onsite for the race. They'll be posted around the course to heal what ails ya if the need arises.

On the schwag front, REI is coming to the party and bringing lot's of gifts. Try a complete Redline Monocog, a shiny new Fox 80 RLC fork, a Garmin GPS, a SRAM X9 Groupo, a Surly SS conversion kit, etc. Big thanks to the team at REI who will be onsite during the race and festival.

We also got a shipment from our freinds at Tifosi Optics containing some really cool sunglasses.

Also the UPS man delivered cowbells...yep you heard that right, every racer and a huge number of fans will receive cowbells to bang away on during the race. While were at it, look for special pint glasses adorned with the DSG logo and the logo of our favorite local brewery: Yazoo! Swiftwick is coming strong as well with socks for racers. If you like the Team NMB version you'll be happy to know that Sharpie has designed a great pair of extry special DSG socks for all racers!

Lot's more where this came from.

Get yourself signed up to win some cool schwag and have a great weekend of Fat Tire fun. Remember, all the schwag...including six bikes or frames are yours for the taking simply by signing up. I think that I can safely say the odds won't get much better to walk away with not only a great time, but most likely some cool prizes.

Hey Ron - Although I can't speak officially for Clay, Grant, or the DSG team - I'm guessing that huge flooding won't even make a dent in this race!! It's on private land, which is only open for this race - not yearly riding, so I'm guessing the 'mud laws' are a little less strict with this trail and rain, shine, or tornadoes this race is on!! (well, maybe not tornadoes??)

No more rain talk!! :hi:

GNC
04-18-2007, 10:45 PM
Rain or shine we will have a blast. Fingers are crossed, but we have a huge tent and shelter will be readily available if mother nature doesn't play nice. The latest I've seen suggests that the weather should be ok, but long range forcasts are not real reliable so as I mentioned, fingers are crossed.

I delivered a truckload of schwag and prizes to Fayetteville today and was able to sneak in a lap with Clay. The course is in amazing shape and I can't say enough about the work that Kevin has done. The grounds are shaping up and we also picked up a 6' x 4' aireal map that has mile markers and an elevation plot. It will be posted at the site for reference.

As some of you know we are using RFID timing from RTS for this event. This means that every racer will have a wristband and there will be no need to sign in and out in the transition area. Riders will simply walk their bikes over the timing strip and their teammate will enter at the same spot, or if solo, they will simply continue. This will allow easier transitions and also afford instant lap times that will be shown on a large screen during the race.

Fast lap get's $125!!!

We are still signing up riders daily and the field is filling out. I'd encourage anyone interested to step up and join us for what will be a great event. We could use a couple more Corporate Teams. Not to mention, with the amount of great prizes and schwag you'll definately get your money's worth.

Thanks,

Grant

GNC
04-24-2007, 09:46 AM
All of the hills are great! That last hill does feel like a cruel joke though. My advice is settle in for the first three climbs and know that you can rest between them. From my perspecitve, the third climb is the most painful...it is sort of two climbs in one with a small break at the halfway point. The good news is that most of the big climbing takes place on jeep roads with plenty of room for folks to pass or be passed. After the third climb the course goes to mostly rolling single track and you can really get into a rythm if you have not blown yourself up on the early climbs.

I've heard some discussion of hand discomfort. Make plans to demo some Ergon Grips Friday afternoon at DSG. Come with your grips already removed and look for the bright green Ergon tent. Jeff Kerkove and company will be on hand to show off the complete line of Ergon products.

I've had a request for a trail description for some of our out of town riders. Below is my best effort. Please don't hesitate to add your own take on the course if I've missed anything.

The DSG course is 10.6 miles with approximately 1,500+/- feet of elevation change. It is a mix of field track, jeep road and single track with 3 or 4 bridges throughout the course. The single track is not particularly technical, but there are a few rocks in places and some fun switch backs both uphill and down. The downhills on this course are both single track and jeep road and are moderate at best. Only one has some rutting that can be a bit bothersome. I believe that we are putting up a sign to point this out. The rest are as fast as you want them.

The race will start with a Lemans start that includes a 100 yard run up. The first couple miles take place in the field that will hold the start / finish line and vendor village. This is basically flat and big ring fast and should allow a nice warm up before crossing the first bridge and entering single track.

The climbing begins at around mile 2.5 and is made up of 3 nice sized jeep road climbs. Lots of room for passing and being passed with good rest periods between efforts. After the second long climb we will likely have a water and feed station. The third climb is the most taxing and has a sort of false summit that always makes me wince just a little...we talked about putting a sign at this point that says, "Not yet!"

After the third climb at about mile five you are mostly in rolling single track with one fun uphill switchback section. You'll know you've hit this section by the rock step up that looks much worse than it really is. If you don't want to hit this head on, stay left and roll the approach on the outside. The other option is just a bit farther right and is a small rock ramp that will take you up the first step. After this step the switchbacks are pretty gravy.

Enjoy the next few miles of single track as it ends like a slap in the face at mile 9.5ish with the last big climb of the course. After that more single track and downhill to a flat feild section to the start finish tent. At around mile 10, watch out for the last single track downhill out of "Lucy's Loop" as it ends with a hard left on a jeep road and can catch you off guard.

Before the tent you will see some chicanes that are designed to slow riders down before they dismount and go through the start / finish tent. All riders will be issued RFID bands and simply need to cross the pad to be scored. Teammates will enter from the right for their laps, solo riders will exit the tent and repeat.

Good times!

Grant

Click on the underlined link "two miles". This wil get you to MapQuest.

On another note, Monique and Ron Sawicki are in town. They rode the course yesterday and had great things to say about it. After a ten minute warm-up they took off. I can tell you that we are in for a real treat with the pro riders. Think laps in the one hour range, and that is at Monique's endurance pace. I can only imagine what the fast lap will be, but it is sure to be well under an hour. Crazy stuff!

Last call for racers! Today is the last day to register for DSG. Register online today for your chance at beaucoup schwag and a guaranteed good time.

Clay and company have been hard at work putting the final touches on the race venue. We've got three huge tents up and the course is marked with tape and banners. We've got the 20' tower up as well as the podium. The generator is onsite and light towers are installed. Porto-lets are delivered and water has been plumbed. I've got one more stop to pick-up the rest of the schwag and a few more details to confirm. The trophys have been delivered and they are amazing...very unique and very cool. Each one was hand built.

We've worked since October to build the kind of event that combines all of the best parts of the great events we've all been to. This event is all about good vibes. A huge group of folks that all share a passion for bikes, a challenging race course, a pile of great prizes and schwag, all combined for two days of good times.

One more HUGE Thank You to all the sponsors and partners that have helped DSG become a reality!

See you all this weekend!

Grant

I was thinking of coming out tomorrow.

I am not going to ride in the race, but would like to ride the trail while It's still open.

Is it possible that I can do the trail tomorrow April 27, before the race ?

Anybody have any knowledge of this ?

Thanks for the info.

Looks like your one of the Yazoo Crew.

Just tried one for the first time tonight, first one went down smooth, the other five just seemed to to evaporate.

Dos Perros, good stuff !

Good luck in the race !

If you haven't left yet for the weekend...I noticed that there was another way to get there if you live on the I-24 side of town, rather than the I-65 side.

You can take I-24 East out toward Murfreesboro, and then hit 231 South to get there a little faster than heading all the way over to I65 first...it works out to be about 20 miles less this way.

Called Grant to make sure this wasn't just a google flub or something, and he said that way works great too!!

Just a quick heads up! See everyone there!! Planning to leave about noon-ish today!

Thanks to everyone that made it out to the innaugeral Dirt, Sweat and Gears! You made the event a huge success. Whether you were one of the nearly 190 riders that came out to challenge the course or one of the over 1,000 spectators that were on hand to watch the madness unfold, we want to Thank You for your attendance.

The weather turned out to be perfect for the weekend. We gave away $10K in cash and over $15K in prizes to racers. Among the highlights were the 7 bikes and frames that went to very happy attendees and the crazy schwag toss that went on for 20 minutes at the end of the awards ceremony. Can you say flying Tifosi's...?

Thanks again to all of the fantastic sponsors that made this event a reality. Without your partnership DSG would not have happened.

Most importantly, we raised a good deal of money for a great cause, Al's Pals!

We are already planning next years DSG and expect to make a few adjustments as well as few additions. I can't wait for round two!

Thanks again,

Grant

P.S. Results are posted at: http://www.dirtsweatandgears.com/

Actually, the article said Carey Lowery got second in the Cohutta 100.

Clip from article:

"In third, Carey Lowery showed herself well healed after her second-place at the Cohutta 100 the previous Saturday. "

Any word on when registration opens for next year?

GNC
05-02-2007, 04:30 PM
Actually we contacted Cycling News and asked for a correction. They jumped on it quickly.

Registration will likely open earlier this year as we are expecting to put a cap on entries. Our goal is to grow the event, but not at the cost of hurting the ride with too many folks on the trail. I think we can hit a good number of riders that does not damage the vibe.

I am already pumped about the second installment of DSG!

Don't forget that we've got the NMB XC race coming up at Cotton Mill and this will be a blast. We are working on the details and hope to build a great race.

Thanks,

Grant

Steve,

We will definately be sending emails to this years attendees. We've got a meeting next week to go over the game plan for next years DSG. We are considering a few additions to the event...maybe a six hour option??? We are also working now to insure that DSG2 is even better than DSG1.

Thanks again for making the trip down. The crew from MI was great to have in attendence.
