    Grand Opening a Success

Thanks to Woody's Bicycles, Bob Richards Trails and Greenways director for the State of Tennessee, Barbara Woods (Lewisburg Mayor), and everyone who made the trip to Fayetteville for our Grand opening. Woody's Bicycles and TREK put 30 Helmets on our kids heads. We had a great time yesterday, kids were everywhere riding and running the trails. Pictures are on the blog, thanks again to Woody's Bicycles and TREK for supporting Trails for Kids.

    Another Great Trail Workday

20 post dug, two bridges built, another 100 yards of trail cleared, lunch from Little Caesars then a 4 mile hike and a swim in the Elk River. What would these kids have done if there were no Trails for Kids?

Elk River Trail Closed, Back door politics and Greed!

Fayetteville Tennessee might lose the best thing that has every happened to this community. One year ago the Recreation Board approved this project, 6 Alderman voted and gave me permission to build 4 miles of sweet single track along the Elk River. One year later and 3.75 miles finished, and a Electric Company (FPU) and a Mayor are trying to shut down this project. We need help! Call the city of Fayetteville and talk to the Mayor or the Alderman who will vote on this project next Tuesday. Here is a list to contact or e-mail http://fayettevilletn.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={2C5856A4-57B9-4A68-AEB1-898073E23C25} http://fayettevilletn.com/index.asp?Type=B_DIR&SEC={FCBA4977-E583-46CA-9781-B8275F29A884}&DE={CE1B2164-5328-4409-BA3C-C9C43AAAECA9} 931-433-6154 is the phone number for the city. Trails serve everyone, this project is the best idea we have ever had in Fayetteville, please let your voice be heard, Tuesday at 5pm the Alderman meet to vote on this,

Why would they reverse their decission? Is it going to be developed? Or are they worried about liability? From what I've seen, this has been a very possitive move for the community, especially the kids you have worked with.

    Good Luck

Good O Boy Small Town Politics, everyone loves this trail system but our Electric Company does't want to share or to be held liable for the 17 years of water pollution that TDEC is getting ready to hammer them with! Watch this worksession, scroll to 1 hour and 45 minutes and you'll see me go off on our electric company and mayor!

    Water Pollution

Scroll to 1 hour and 46 minutes and ask yourself why we allow our water to be polluted?

That's too bad Kevin. Hope you get your trails back.. Too bad you got to see the good and bad of small town politics.. I think someone should have gave the chairman lady, what ever her title is, only four mins to talk... She acted as if she was doing the citizens a favor giving each of you four whole mins to talk. With her watch in her hand. I would not have been as nice as you where. Good luck.
Did you hear the one about the guy on his death bed that said "I wish I would have worked more and rode my bike less". Said NO ONE EVER. -Jeff Scott

    Help us save our Trails

    To the Editor:
Fall break is this week and it is beautiful time to enjoy nature. Our community leaders need to take notice that families have to go to Huntsville, Manchester, Shelbyville, Tullahoma, or Winchester to find superior family recreational facilities and parks. With this situation there will be a continuance of childhood obesity and diabetes. Is that the future families and industry look for when choosing a community?
My husband and I moved with our four children to Fayetteville last July to be near my parents and his training with the 101st at Ft. Campbell before an Afghanistan deployment. Moving to a small city has been quite a culture shock for our children. What they have missed most is having access to year-round swimming and parks within short driving distances.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find Kevin Freeman’s blog last fall and learn about his work on the Trails for Kids path. My 8-year-old son and I walked the trail (identifying trees, bugs, and birds) just before it was closed by the city. Like most young kids he really enjoys being outside and absorbing the sights and sounds of nature.
I applaud all the volunteers who have made this path possible. I am anxious for FPU and our city’s leaders to resolve the issues that have restricted access to the Trails for Kids paths. My favorite memories of Fayetteville include the times I spent with Mrs. Flavil Hatcher at the Fayetteville Jr. High Environmental Center. What will your children’s memories of Fayetteville include? Sadly, my kids memories will include long rides to other places.

More letters to the Elk Valley times

Kevin Freeman has spent two years of his life and has given a wonderful gift to this community. With his family and a handful of volunteers he created a network of paths at Don Davidson Park, just off the bypass. The paths wind along meadows and through cool glades of ancient trees next to a creek and along the Elk River. The Trails for Kids were worked on by community service youth and by Eagle Scouts who erected countless wood duck and blue bird houses. The paths were cut through wilderness with backbreaking love and imagination. Kevin is a highly unusual person to have given this trail while asking for nothing from the city beyond permission to proceed.
Unbelievably, city leaders have chosen to close several miles of the most beautiful of the trails because they do not wish to inconvenience FPU. FPU continues (at an annual cost of less than $5,000!) to lease the land that some of the trails skirt, and their dumping of the Class B bio solids on the 120 acres beside the Elk River and next to Don Davidson Park is a higher priority than our having a beautiful place to walk.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, in a letter dated September 24, 2010 to FPU, outlined 14 items that they should “consider” as they use the land. State and Federal guidelines have clearly been violated many times at the site. The acreage is too close to our soccer fields and other ball fields, too close to surface waters, too close to wetlands and sinkholes. It is in a flood plain! It should never have been approved for this in the first place. FPU and TDEC know this. When the site was first approved for bio solids in 1989, it was to be used for up to 20 years. The 20 years is up!
FPU is now attempting to convince TDEC to apply older, less stringent state and federal guidelines so that the city does not have to choose between FPU and the parks. If FPU follows buffer laws there will be virtually no dumping area remaining between the Elk, the wetlands, the sinkholes, and the ball fields. Even the less stringent guidelines were too inconvenient for FPU, as evidenced by the numerous areas of severe rutting and the tile drains that ran from beneath the dumping fields to the creek.
Citizens, we must make sure that this acreage is reclaimed for recreation. The city should not lease the beautiful river bottom property to FPU. Kevin and the volunteers trusted the city leaders with a precious gift. Let us reclaim that gift.

Watch live streaming video from fpuchannel6 at livestream.com

Farris Ralston speaks on behalf of Friends of Path and River at 32 minutes into the video.

Dudley Fox, ( So called expert for CTI) tries to make **** smell like roses and dispute my allegations of FPU using the 120 acres like a landfill.

The last 5 minutes I inform our alderman, I hope they were listening!
