    Strippin' Paint?

    Hey guys,
I recently picked up a Specialized bike off Craigslist for a whopping $10 and was looking to strip it down to the bare aluminium and polish it up. The bike is an early 2000's Rock Hopper, all componets were rusted, but the frame is in good shape.

I know you can use aircraft aluminium stripper to get it down to bare metal, but I'm not huge on the idea of that since getting the paint from the welds seems like a pain, not to mention that stuff is brutal on hands / clothes / etc. Does anyone know how I can tell if the current paint is powercoated or not? More importantly, does anyone have a recommendation for getting the paint off the bike?

I called around to some local powdercoating places today and it seems everyone does shot blasting with some type of fine grain material (sand, crushed glass, etc.). Will those type of blasters create small dents in the frame? Does anyone have an acid tank that could just dunk the frame and peel the paint off? The aluminium is pretty thin from what I can tell.

Since I have some experience in detailing cars, I have some fine grit wetsanding paper here that I will use to finish up the frame, after the current paint is gone. Hope to get it looking good and make it a trail bike!

Hopefully I can keep this thread going with some photos along the way.

    Thanks!

    Stripper

I do have a stripper that will take of paint or powder coating. I also work with a media blaster that blasts with plastic bead that will not damage your bike and leaves a realitively smooth finish unlike sand or aluminum oxide. Give me a shout and I will hook you up.

    Thanks for the link, Ron.

That is exactly what I'm going after, there are a few threads at MTBR about stripping / raw aluminium frames. Hopefully, I'll have the same type thread over on NMB in the coming weeks.

I've sent Nic a PM, will wait for his reply and go from there.
