Helmets: Tell me what you wear and why you like it,

    or dislike like it.

I'm looking for a helmet to help keep my XL noggin in pristine condition. I like the look of this one...

and it comes in a size that might actually fit me (though not at REI). Does anyone have an opinion about this helmet?

    Many thanks,

    Hasbin

I wear a full-face helmet most of the time (even though almost all of my riding is XC, not downhill):

I was riding with a friend on his first time out at Long Hunter...I learned a lesson the hard way about not looking back to check on him. Once, when I looked forward again, saw a tree in my way and turned too sharp to avoid, throwing me off the bike and "kissing the ground." The bottoms of my front teeth are bonded and break easily. I came within a quarter inch of breaking them again that day. I went home and immediately ordered the full-face helmet. I have been happy with it ever since...it is not too hot and it has kept me from several teeth-breaking and face-injuring falls. Sure, it scares the civilians and people think you are a downhill guy, but oh well...

When I ride with the wife or somewhere with little to no risk of crashing, I ride with a normal helmet:

I also have a big noggin (7-5/8 hat size) and a large size in each of the above fits me fine...it was hard to find the right fit, I had to try on a lot of helmets.

    Hope this helps!

I wear a skate style helmet when riding (see photo album on my profile for a little pic) My brother wears a mountain style giro helmet. Mediums fit both of us fine in our respective helmet styles. Not sure what my hat size might be though, b/c I never wear hats.

    +1 on this.

i went around and tried on many helmets and found some to be more comfy than others. They all fit differently even when they were made by the same company. Just go to the bike shop and see which one fits the best.

Definitely try them on. I have a Bell (~75 list but got for 1/2 price since it was last years model).

The Giro did not fit me well. We have a free TREK helmet that neither of us like. It has no padding on the top???

    TRY THEM ON FIRST>

…but on Voyage 34, he finally met himself coming down an up-staircase, and the encounter was crushing (Porcupine Tree).

Thanks everyone for the advise. I haven't needed a bike helmet for about 11 years and never did find one I was happy with back then.

I'll go to out this weekend and try on a bunch.

    Best,
