    Oldie Newbie

    Hello all...

Me: Old man looking to get/stay in shape. Not all that interested in blazing trails...do like to get off the street. To that end, I'm building up a couple of urban cruisers to replace the !@#$%^&* Walmart Mongoose Vadium that I'm forced to ride these days. It works okay, but doesn't really match my riding style.

I've posted in the Classifieds what I need to build up my '90 Bianchi hybrid, and roughly same vintage Diamondback MTB beaters. As things break on them, I'll want to upgrade; but right now, I just want/need to get both of them rolling. The DB is being problematic, as the fork steerer tube I need is inordinately long for a 1", at 8.25" (threaded)...otherwise it's ready to go.

The Bianchi has a lovely lugged steel frame--but all original Sakae/Suntour/Diacomp group with 175mm cranks and riveted (and bent) Biopace rings. Much room for improvement there....

Anyway...just wanted to say hi (and maybe prompt a few of you declutter your attics or garages).

Riding instead of sleeping...it's 2:30am and I just got back from a short shakedown of my new/old Bianchi. Finally found her some shoes today off CL...yeah, those. (I know at least half of you saw them.)

Not a bad deal, and exactly what I was looking for. The 700c x 32 Continentals were a perfect match for both the 19mm Rigida rims and the hybrid lugged Tange frame. I picked up the 8 speed cassette as well. I've been wrenching, lubing and tweaking all evening (got a late start). Must say I'm very pleased with the old girl now. I'll need to change out shifters and rear der next, as the old Suntour is indexed for only six, and it's really a stretch to get to the biggest ring...making it basically useless. The ratios are pretty compatible with the old Biopace on the front, and the 175mm cranks make it a pretty comfortable push for these old, long legs. There's some hunting in the middle gears due to the indexing mismatch...but overall I'm ecstatic. Sweet. Didn't even haggle the price.

    It's a bike...a real bike, not a Mongoose!
