DSG 6 Hour? Would you be interested?

    All,

Just a quick poll here. Merle and us Squirrels at DSG are considering adding a 6 hour option for the next Dirt, Sweat and Gears.

    We're interested in your feedback.

Would ya? Would a buddy? Would that guy you met at the local grocery store? Would your old high school pal be interested?

    Feedback please.

    Thanks,

    Grant

I would be interested in doing it 6 hours especially if I end up solo but I may be there as a team again doing the 12 hour. But I will be there either way as well.

    I have a question Grant.

If we have a six hour race... does that mean I have half the time to get drunk & throw up on something?

Just want to know how to pace myself.

I'm pretty sure I can do this, so I think it's a good idea!

I just saw that you guys are doing it on May 14th and the SERC/TBRA race at Tanasi is on the 15th again. I did both last year with disastrous results. After 12 hours at DSG I drove over and spent the night in Cleveland and tried to do Tanasi the next morning and drudged my way through the race for my worst finish of the year. I really like both races but not sure I'm going to try the double again I ended up with a little more climbing that weekend than my legs could handle. Not sure how I'm going to decide probably depends on how points are looking at the time.

Would the 6 hour and the 12 hour be start, and thus run at the same time? I'm in either way also, but just thought I'd ask anyway.

I like the idea if theory for me, but my ego would probably get in the way and I would do the 12 hour instead. On a plus side for you, the Black Bear Rampage had a 20 mile option this year and had a ton of people in it. The 6 hour option might attract a less harcore competitor that wouldn't normally sign up. More people = more fun.

    Great idea!

6 hours would be perfect. Mere mortals just can't do the 12 hour solo. I've done some 6 hour races that started/ran the same time as the 12 hour race. The format worked great.

Grant - can you make it rain ONLY after the 6 hour race is done?

Grant I for one would be interested, now with kido and my travel I do not seem to have time to do any "big" time commits, but for a 6 hour race where I could come down race and be home to play with Millier... yea I may be interested..

I sure you could guess that I'm going to say I don't like the idea.. And here is why. Were does it stop. The race has so many categories already. You have the premiere 12 hour event in the area. Do what you do best. I think it just waters down the competitions. And the prizes. I don't think by having a six hour option will add to your numbers. it will just take away from other categories.. A race can't be all things to all racers. DSG is an endurance event. Be an endurance event.

Plus there is already a six hour option or not.. A racer can stop any time he or she wants too. Or race duo or on a team. There is already some six hour races out there. So you really would not be filling a void in the race scene.

Really I don't care if there is a Six hour option. I think DSG will good either way. I'm just playing devil's advocate. giving some reasons why it might not be a good idea. I say give the people what they want.

Is this the equivalent of a metric century?

If not, I'm all in, because we all know what metric century's are.

I'll be back either way. For me DSG is not about winning, but about riding bikes, drinking beer with friends, and having a good time. Oh and free Swiftwick socks - and Awesome Straps - and beer.

Thanks for the feedback. Our goal here is to offer another opportunity for solo riders to ride...solo. The thought being that a 6 hour meal of single track might be more appealing to many and also offer a chance to compete in a shorter format. (Steven, 24 hours might be a bit too ambitious and you'd likely have beers tossed you way during the night. Jeffy, you are a hard man...that is meant as a compliment by the way. Uzzi, don't use that word. Spec Michael, we are also mixing things up by focusing on the Duo component this year to appeal to more of the XC crowd.)

We've seen a dramatic increase in the number of 6 and 8 hour events over the past two years, and their popularity seems to be growing.

At the end of the day, Squirrels just want to make people happy...we think that this might contribute to that goal. Merle on the other hand...well he's a bit of a grump on most days and just wants a handful of oats from time to time.

DSG exists for the riders, and any feedback you've got will help us keep this thing growing and evolving.

Stay tuned as we are planning an announcement in the next week with details.

We've got a couple ideas up our sleeves that should add some entertainment to the weekend. Think taco cart time trial and Friday Night Lights Hot Lap.

    Thanks,

    Grant

Portell and I are doing the 3 State 3 Mt. back in May, riding along we come to the place where metric century option splits off. We'd been riding a few miles with a guy we didn't know and out of the blue he says, "metric centuries are gay".

Now that I know that, I avoid anything resembling a metric century. I still shave my legs and wear tights, but metric centures are out. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

My apologies, bad form to tell an inside joke only you and one other person on the board are going to get. Now all of you can enjoy, or not. Sorry for the aside. Back to the 6 hour discussion.

    Grant,
I think the 6 hour is a good option. They seem to be the most popular option down here. I tend to agree with Jeffy, that it may not increase you numbers significantly. Personally, DSG may be the only 12 hour I do next year. The festival like atmosphere, sleeping on site and the start time make DSG a perfect 12 hour set up. We did a 5 race series of 12 hours and by number 3 we ready to pack it in after 6 hours. We didn't camp on site, so we were up at 5 or 6, drive an hour or two, ride 12ish hours, be done at 10pm, awards and home by midnight. Long day. I'm not going to lie and say I wasn't jealous of the 6 hour folks. So 6 may be a good option for local folks.
On a side note, the pace of the 6 hour riders out there is pretty crazy. Some of these boys can peg it for 6 hours, which is crazy.
    mid pack fodder at best

Grant- I think the 6 hour would be a great option, but in addition to the 12, on a different date. It sounds here like a lot of people really enjoy the 12, and like Jeffy and xtanker said I don't think it would increase your numbers. I think it would be cool to do a 6 hour earlier in the season, to get warmed up? March or April perhaps?

If there were a 6 hour option, I would likely do that solo, which would be awesome. Jeff has a point though, and I agree largely with that. If there is only a 12 hour class, I would do that on a team instead.

6 Hours Class Won't Ruin DSG

    Grant -

There is a long standing yearly race, 12 hours of Santos and they have 2 6 hour options - fun class and money class, plus the 12 hour solo, team, duo etc. It's a great event with so many riders there was a 2 minute log jam at the first turn. I think you will have more people doing it solo.

Jeffy doesn't know what he's talking about. He's turned into a crazy coot. But I still like him. Sorta.

All great points Tim. Yeah if the race was in Santos, FL. BUt DSG, as you know, is in Fayetteville,TN.. Those FL people are weird anyway. Not really like the rest of the south.

But based on the responses. I'm sure there is going to be a six hour option. That's good. I like to see the racers get what they want. Well within reason.

I'd like to see a 24 hour event at this site as well, perhaps not the same date but then again why not? I figure if everybody is already there hanging out until the next morning anyways, why not let some crazy folks keep riding through the night if they want? Just be prepared to swerve around the staggering drunks and avoid the occasional tossed beer can!

I looked on the DSG site last night and did not see any mention of a "6 hour class"?

No kidding! After my jaunt around with you guys last summer I came home and started hunting for the biggest hills I could find. Southern DeSoto county MS has some big ones that even hit 15-20% grade. I'd like to try that ride again! OTOH, I don't want them to get too tough, then I won't have an excuse!

I've seen the pics. If it rains, I'm not going to be that tough. No sense in making my first MTB race ever totally discouraging...
