    2012 Epic Expert 29er

She arrive early - and I got my first test ride in this morning. All I can say is WOW This is going to be fun. I did a 3 mile ride at Shutes in preparation for a ride at Lock 4 tomorrow morning. It seemed really fast and rolled over everything smoothly. I will obviously have some getting used to the difference in handling, but it seemed to come quickly. ~25 pounds with Shimano 540 pedals, Ergon grips, and a water bottle cage. I did switch out the bar for a Bontrager carbon bar that I got at a race and I also switched out the rear tire for a regular Fast Trak LK - 2.0 Big thanks to David, Dan, and Darryl (the 3-D's of biking) at Bikers Choice.

Little Caveman - 2010 Voodoo Hoodoo 26'er - Steel is Still Real / custom build

…but on Voyage 34, he finally met himself coming down an up-staircase, and the encounter was crushing (Porcupine Tree).

Great looking bike Steve. I saw it just after they finished building it at the shop on Wednesday it looked great in person. All execpt that darn TREK handlebar on there (first thing I noticed) that is so wrong on so many levels!! only kidding kind of

I've seen several bontranger components I've liked especially their aerobar set up but as much as I like it I still can't bring myself to put it on my bike. But of course I'm a Specialized purist all the way.

Once again great bike can't wait to see you ripping up the trails on it. I've rode the last two days with Josh on his and he is loving it.

Just got back from the first REAL ride (3 miles doesn't count). We did the L4 trail and Time Trial loop 2x. All I can say is I'm very happy with the ride. It doesn't seem to have any of the bad properties of 29'ers - it accelerates quickly, climbs great, takes sharp curves well. I can even pop short weelies over stuff. It almost handles like a 26er except it rolls over stuff so well. I did shave about 10 seconds off my TT time, but I'm still learning the limits. The 2x10 is awesome. Best under power shifting ever - front or rear gears. It also lands very smoothly on the small drop-offs at L4.

We ran into Josh Lewis and he got his on Monday and has been rippng it every day since.

PS Charlie rode my Superlight today and seemed to like it. It's the first time he has ridden a FS bike on a trail.

I agree with Michael, that Bontrager bar just ain't right. It's a sweet bike though.

Who can argue with a free carbon bar??? I wonder if a Specialized rep would give me a carbon bar to set things right? LOL

Keep the bonty bar! It's a little punk rock....or a nice piece of functional gear.

I kinda like a different bar on the bike. I like Specialized bikes but it's a little over the top when they brand every little thing on there bikes. It's good to mix things up.

I'm sure the 2014 bikes will have Specialized hydro brakes, shifters, derailleurs, chain and pedals.

I agree with Chris I'm not crazy about all that branding either same way Trek does with Bontranger components. The only thing Specialized on my bikes are the frame. I run FSA bars and stem, Thomson seatpost, and stans wheels. I was just giving Steve a hard time about putting a mostly trek in house brand bar on a Specialized bike. I really don't care that much and would never fault someone for putting to use a free carbon bar. In my mind I just look for the best component possible and us it no matter the brand. Strike that I mean the lightest possible component and use that .

Specialized branded components are natorious for being heavy. I sold one of the guys on my team a Thomson masterpiece seatpost for his 2012 epic he just got this week. We weighted them both and the Thomson was 150g lighter than the stock one that is an entire extra seatpost. He also changed stem and bars to something lighter. Although the stock components are made to be more durable because they don't know the size of the rider or how they intend to ride the bike so they are normally very conservative on weight and durability.

I do have to say that the new stock wheel set this year seems to be fairly light and well made compared to last years steaming heaps of crap.

That looks great Steve!! Hope you continue to love it! New bikes are a blast!! What's the plan for the old one then? Is that gonna be Charlie's new ride? Or are you keeping it around to switch out once in a while?

Not yet - but soon! The rocks at Shutes were good! I'll head out to Hammy after the L4 races this weekend.

Charlie has been riding the Superlight. No real coments - because I think he feels guilty for not riding his Voodoo.
