    Helmets Are Good

Well, I had a pretty scary crash today.

I was on BLT 2 at Lock 4. At right hand turn, at the bottom of the big
fast downhill, right before you start back uphill, my front wheel washed
out at between 15-20 mph. I'm not real sure how it all went down, I hit
so fast and hard. I do know my helmet hit the ground hard, and knocked
my visor off. The first thing I checked was my collarbone that I broke 2
years ago. That still works. Somehow I skinned up both arms and both
knees. I got a really nasty bruise on my left quad and it is really swollen.
I had already ridden one lap, so I decided that was the end of my ride. I
walked out to the road. Got on my bike, to ride back to the car, and noticed
    my front wheel was taco'd.

Anyway, back to the point of this thread. After I checked to make sure my
body still works. I get up, take my helmet off and it's broken in 3 places.
I know who I am, and where I am, so my Helmet did the trick.

You are right. The helmet is not the equipement to skimp on when you are riding your bike.

Did you find your visor? I lost mine in a crash, about a month ago, just into BLT4. Looked everywhere, in the trees and all. No luck. Now I feel like a roadie. I miss my visor.

Glad you didn't break anything else!

It only broke free on one side. What kind of helmet do you have? I may have an extra visor.

Do you mind posting a picture of that helmet? Those visuals always help when I need to make a point with someone regarding their effectiveness.

I've cracked 2 mtb helmets now and no concussion from either. I hate to think what would of happened had I not been wearing a helmet. Every time I see someone helmetless at a mtb trail, it makes me cringe.

Glad to hear u r OK....On the same note. But it didn't look like the guy who got hit by that car in Murfreesboro was wearing a helmet. For that matter. Didn't seem to have lights either. Correct me if I'm wrong. But when I watched the video. I did not see a helmet. Could be wrong. Cause I wear bifocals now.

Note to self. If ever riding a bike in Murfreesboro at 2am. Please remember to wear helmet.
Did you hear the one about the guy on his death bed that said "I wish I would have worked more and rode my bike less". Said NO ONE EVER. -Jeff Scott

Here's 2 pics. Its broken in 3 places, but the outside perimeter part of the helmet
is the only part I can get a decent picture of.

Thanks a bunch for that. I have two or three other pictures of broken helmets that I show beginners who think that helmets are 1) nerdy or 2) uncomfortable. I then remind them that these come from EXPERIENCED riders (including one of my own helmets) and you never know when you're going to have your 'big wreck'. I just won't tolerate any arguments to the contrary.

    Thanks again.

I've actually got another helmet that is broken.
Broke it the first time I wore it. You're right, you
never know. Could be your first ride. Might never
happen. Better to be safe, nerdy or uncomfortable than to be sorry.
