I AM MOUNTAIN - MTB Festival and Race May 25th Hamilton Creek

It's officially official. Well, mostly. Few more details to iron out, but the folks at I AM THE ENGINE have taken on what has been a small community event (Hamilton Creek Fat Tire Festival) and are taking it to the next level! There will be a bunch of races - XC, Short Track, even a "Mini" Down Hill and a Time Trial. There will be kid's races and the usual craziness of the Hill Climb, Skid Race and so much more ! Here is the flyer - Forgive the FB link -

    Tim,

What is this trail fund? Is this going to SORBA?

Hmmm this may just be as controversial as the bike raffle.Like I said in the other thread we need some real answers.

As far as the "Mini DH" event, we are working on adding a "Skills Course" as we have previous years. It will consist of small trials elements, skinnies, at least one JHUMP. Who knows, maybe we can even talk the Sofa King into bring back Bristol! In years past this has been feature that gets a lot of attention and use.

    Hey guys,

I've seen a lot of chatter around I AM The Engine and the I AM Mountain event that we are hosting on May 25th. I'm glad people are talking about it, but I'm feeling a bit surprised at some in our mountain bike community's negative tone towards something new and different.

I want to ask a question that I hope will answer several questions in the process.

What is the legacy of a mountain bike race? A road race? Most cycling events?

The answer is that most don't provide for a legacy at all, or create any change impact on the community. I AM The Engine is a movement that thinks we can change this. We're not the only group that is trying to accomplish this by any means, but there's room in our community (Nashville, Mid Tennessee, the Southeast region) for groups who all want to move cycling, healthy living, and community involvement in the same direction.

One way we want to create a legacy is through the I AM Foundation trail fund. A few people have asked what this is. It's pretty much what it sounds like. Instead of taking the proceeds from this single event and donate them directly to a group like Mid TN SORBA, we now have the ability to pool funds from this event and future events in Chattanooga or other areas and make funds available for specific projects that need it. I spoke with Darryl Glasscock from SORBA the other day about it and he was all for it. It's that simple.

There's a lot of things going on this year, and it's really our first year. We are bringing great music to established and new events - Blues Traveler, and The Whigs (along with other bands) to the Harpeth River Ride; Jessta James, and the Cold Stares (along with two DJs) to I AM Mountain. We are planning a huge bash downtown at Bicentennial Mall for the Battle of Nashville criterium in August and another big Gran Fondo event in the fall. All of these events are intended to be community, family oriented events. Not simply cycling races or rides. We are working really hard on these events with a core team of truly dedicated individuals at the same time that we are building an organization that is sustainable and has the ability to create lasting change in our communities.

The bottom line is that it is happening whether you help us or not... but that doesn't mean we don't need your help. Ideas? please bring them to our attention. Feedback on events? Let us know so we can make the events better. Want to volunteer? There's no shortage of things to get done. Feel like sitting on the sidelines and talking trash? Fine, do that too.

Is all of this ambitious? Of course it is. It wouldn't be worth doing otherwise. So is mountain biking.

    From our mission statement:

If inside you is a desire to harness the incredible power of your human body, and unleash
the self-propelled spirit that is inherent in us all, we invite you to join our movement.
To explore yourself and determine what you would like to be. To commit to a life driven
by fitness, healthful eating, service to your world and your community, and encouraging
others to do the same. and to wake up every morning and say proudly, “I AM The Engine.”

If any of you have specific questions about what we are doing, or general questions about our mission, feel free to contact me directly. I am not necessarily going to monitor this thread for responses, but I would love to talk to anyone with questions.

    Nathan,

I think I Am the Engine is GREAT! Any group, organization, or individual that tries to help motivate, bring together, or inspire ANYTHING related to cycling is going to be positive for the cycling community.

The bigger the cycling community, the greater the voice and footprint we have at getting more trails opened or more bike lanes created.

Thanks for everything you are doing I Am The Engine!

I AM The Engine is an LLC as that is currently the entity type that makes the most sense for it. The trail fund and our racing team (I AM Racing - you may have had your eyes burned by our kits the last few months. they are ... bright) have/will have non profit status as that makes sense for the kinds of activities they participate in.

But these events need to make MONEY for there to be a trail fund! So make sure you register, come out and enjoy what IATE is putting on for US the cycling community! Don't let mine and Nathan's trail work go to waste.

    Smile

This trail fund sounds good, any money that can be collected and spent on PUBLIC Middle TN trails is great, count me in. But dont let it get used for private trails or team kits or anything other than public trails that can be used by all.

Maybe it could be specified only for intermediate or advanced level trails and not more beginner trails. Anybody that has the ability to race 3 races in one day at Hammy is going to want to something more than a beginner trail to ride so their money should go to something they will enjoy themselves, not something for beginners.

Suggestion for another event, I AM Super D !

In super secret meetings at undisclosed locations I have come to discover - I AM THE ENGINE has very large and broad plans for all forms of mountain biking and road biking. I've heard some very exciting discussions about ..lets just say..non Road non-XC events being talked about. I continue to be blown away by this organization.

Defeated Creek Super D, this would be a great trail for a Super D race (going clockwise). XC racing was for the 90's!! Haha!

Uzzi, lets me and you make it happen...no t-shirts, no points, no entry fee, no sponsors, no 2 beers included, just BYOB, a couple of stopwatches, and fun times riding.

I'm all about it. Let's pick a weekend and just do it. Is there a law about two guys at the top and bottom of the trail with cellphones and clip board?

What is a non-road non-XC event? Sounds like a great organization with some big ideas. I wish you guys good luck if that's what our local mountain biking community is looking for. I support your efforts even if I don't show up for your events.

Plenty of opportunities to do that, you just have to go to TTC or Windrock.

Sounds like you are waiting out the weather. I'm not sure - but you can register day of if you wish, festival is only $5 more.

Looks like the weather is going to be right nice, but I'd rather sign up online. Much more convenient.

Woo Hoo! The day is finally here! Looking forward to see you all out there tomorrow! Trail is (going to be) trimmed and buff. Like me. Well, sorta. More like the 20 year old me. Trail is still soft in some spots, but by 3 tomorrow, we should be in good shape.

The event tomorrow is going to be great. The stage is up, the bands are going to rock the waterfront, and the short track, TT, and XC courses are going to be fast and furious (and word is the local BMXers are going to battle for position on the short track!) If you're on the fence about coming to this thing, fall of the fence and come out.

You might even get chased into the woods by a helicopter with a camera (we won't call it a drone until it has a paintball gun mounted to it... maybe next year). I hear the pilot is very good. Don't worry.

Had a great time today fellas. Glad I participated. Don't know why I was upset about Cat 2 being
changed to 1 lap instead of 2. 1 was plenty for me. Can't wait til the next I AM Mountain event.
Wish I coulda stayed for the concert, but gotta work early in the morning.

Thank to everyone who came out, all of the volunteers who worked the event and who worked prior to it getting it ready. As a first year event in this format it wasn't without it's challenges, but it went really well and the bands rocked the waterfront under a full moon until late into the night.

I went out today and cleared the last of the course marking tape, so now everyone should go enjoy Hamilton Creek at it's finest before we get any more rain.

We'll see you guys next year with another I AM Mountain event. Be on the lookout for I AM Criterium at Bicentennial mall downtown on August 3rd. It's going to be another awesome party.

Video recap of the event is coming soon. Those guys generated a ton of footage on Saturday so I expect it'll take a bit to find the best parts. I heard rumors of a few epic OTBs down pinnacle with a few people trying to hot dog it for the camera, and I personally say a massive flyer when one of our racers tried to jump over the drainage culvert near the trailhead at full speed. Missed it by his whole bike. :-)
