I hate hard gears that said - your fastest road cassette will have down to an 11 tooth in the back so if you get something like an 11 - 24 to me i would rather have an 11 - 32 same "fast gear" but I do have something easier when needed. The drawback to a larger spread is you have larger jumps between gears. Road racers hate this as they really try to stay in a tight cadence but it has never bothered me.

So when I had (I no longer have) my old "big bike" I still road the 11 - 32 on the back (even at Windrock)

In the end it is totally personal to how you like to pedal! Have fun

Most DH riders are running 36t front and 11-23 cassette.A 32 or 34 chainring up front feels like not enough gear and it's rare to venture into the 23t or top of the cassette.
