    Clarksville Trail Project

First, a quick formality. I'm referring to this as the "Clarksville Trail Project" because although it has a working name, that name isn't going to stick, but we don't have a formal name for the finished project yet. So, to avoid confusion, since it's the only trail project I know anything about in Clarksville (and I'm pretty certain I'd know about all the ongoing trail projects in Clarksville) we'll call it the Clarksville Trail Project.

Background: The city of Clarksville department of Parks and Recreation has a piece of property that borders the greenway near the Red River that is unsuitable for things such as athletic fields. It is wooded, and fairly hilly. They decided mountain bike trails would be a good use for the property, and started making inquiries. Some meetings were held with the COGS MTB club (now COGS Cycling Club) and members of MidTN SORBA, some maps looked at and passed out, and a layout drawn up and proposed. The property is divided into a north side and south side by a creek. As of now, the layout for the south side has been accepted and is actively being built. The layout for the north side is still under revision to take into account long term engineering plans for a pump station on the property.

Currently: As of today, there are .11 miles of the advanced loop trail finished. An additional .08 miles have been benched using a mini-ex and still require some attention by hand before being finished. There is an additional .17 miles of corridor cleared and prepped for benching. Layout has progressed a total of 1.13 miles along the advanced loop.

What this all means: The projected finished length of the advanced loop is 5.8 miles. The north side of the park will have easy and intermediate trails on it. We estimate 10 miles total trail on this property when complete. It's important to note, these will be bike-only trails, not multi-use - but fear not, there's supposed to be another projected getting under way once this one is done that will be multi-use. Having this project completed means Clarksville will have ~17 miles of trail on offer at two different venues.

How can I help? Good question! If you are near the Clarksville area, and want to help, please, shoot me a message. We try to get volunteer groups in every Saturday morning. We would be glad to have every available hand to help out. I try to post for certain days we will be working on the COGS facebook page (search for COGS MTB) and coordinate things there as much as possible. On the whole Clarksville has a fairly young, but growing MTB scene, and many of the riders don't know a lot about building trail - so if you fear showing up to a work day and not knowing what's going on - don't. I'm almost always showing someone who's there for the first time how they can best help, explaining what's going on, and why things are done a certain way. If you have experience building trail, great! Maybe you can give me a hand with some of the first timers.

Thanks for taking the time to read through all this, I hope to see some of you on work days, and on the trails in the area as well.

Let me guess....they logged this area and decided it wasn't good enough for anything else.

Nope, not the case at all. It looks like parts of it may have been farmland in the 1800's because of a few terraces, but aside from a TVA corridor, it's all woods now.

I'll throw an update out there, just because I took the time to do a little checking yesterday after I finished another section of trail. We currently have 2470 feet of trail finished. At some point, I'll attach some pictures.

A couple of regulars came out yesterday morning in that trail building weather and we got another 200 feet or so of trail built in a couple of hours. Up to just over 3300 feet of trail completed now.

Drive up one Saturday. Work with us in the morning, ride what we've got done, grab lunch somewhere, then hang around for our afternoon social ride at Rotary. I think you might just dig the Amphitheater section there. Make a day of Clarksville. Of course, that will be more fun when we have this project finished.

Sorry man! Don't mean to sound like Super Moto! If you get permission to build jumps at Ma Bell, I'll come help build them.

To make up for being a dick I will tell you that as of a year ago there were some DJs in Clarksville that very few people know about, I haven't been since summer 2012 but I think they still exist...

And there was also a secret DJ line in Franklin, I believe it was either an 8 pack or maybe a 10 pack.

Trail building weather today. Got over 220 feet of trail built today. 3700+ feet finished now, just over .7 of mile. I've spent some time the past couple of weeks re-working sections of the trail that seemed like a good idea at the time, and ended up just being too much.

A couple of weeks ago, we built part of the first big drop line out there too. That's kind of a trip to ride.

It's 3 and a half or 4 feet, drop into a run-in feeder for a good sized gully. It was so tight in the run in (which is about 4-5 feet deep) that we had to widen out the walls a little at a turn so you could get a bike through it. You still have to have your ducks in a row not to hang the RD on a rock, but you have a line choice in the gully at least.

There used to be some really good dirt jumps right in down town franklin and then the city got wind and tore them down.

Bummer. I doubt that's going to happen here, since this project is sanctioned by (and was actually pushed for, and initiated by) the city of Clarksville.

Scraffy, the best way is to join the cogs cycling page on Facebook. I post workdays there, and I personally am out about 3 or 4 days a week doing something.

Haha. That picture was taken from about half way down what the actual rock garden will be. So, hard representative. This is also the second or third one you'll get to.

Am I almost one with the trails? I am one with the trails. Don't ride me when I'm wet......

Now, if you mean, am I almost done with the trails? No. Not even close. Not even close on the south end of the park. Bob hasn't even finished the layout for the North end. But there will be an opening in the spring for at least part of this advanced loop. I should have 2.5 to 3 miles of trail open by then, hopefully enough to convince some people that the trail system isn't a joke, and volunteer labor will pick up some.

Broke 4300 feet today. Tuesday I'm going to have the lifting straps I requested and the excavator. I'll finish collecting rocks, for my little garden. The ones I can't carry by hand. Then cut some more trail. Got a nice run down across the side of a hill on tap now. Probably gap a little run-in on this line.

Gosh. You are joking. Either a pretty darn small tree, or shrub. If big I can't clear it!

Not joking. This (live) tree is big. It's got two branches that are close to 12 inches in diameter. But don't worry, there's a good run up to it. With the ramps we're building, I think anyone who can jump will clear it.

I got the parts in for my rock sling today, so I figured, what the heck, a few more pictures.

One of the three rocks I move to the rock garden (still very much a work in progress) today. Note the glove on top of the rock for scale.
