    Exclamation PWP Unauthorized Trail Work

Hey all - I know the issue of unauthorized trail work / modification was discussed in an earlier thread, but I think it is locked.

On the backside of the Hookman XC loop at PWP, there is a sharp left hand turn, followed by a fast little descent with a short drop over a root or buried log (I think it is actually a living root, but not sure). It is the only little drop on that loop. A friend just called me to report that in the past couple of hours, someone has dug out the front of the root, exposing it. The thought is that they may be preparing to cut it out, just as a similar root on the climb on Hookman was cut out. I gave Darryl a call and he is asking park police to swing by and take a look.

We are having this problem more than expected at PWP - probably because of all the inexperienced riders. I would be truly shocked if it is anyone on this board. This feature definitely should not be removed. Cutting out the trail is serious and can result in a fine, having your bike or car confiscated, or even arrest. If you guys and girls see anyone doing work on the trail, especially removing or modifying features. Please question them. If they can't explain what they're doing and that it is approved, let them know that it is illegal and you are reporting them. Take a picture with your phone. This is bullsh^t.

And if you are planning on night riding tonight - be CAREFUL on that descent. If the root is exposed or removed, it is not going to be what you are expecting. Darryl and Austin and I are all planning on getting out there tomorrow but can't tonight.

Geez, that makes me angry... Must have happened later in the day. Jim Simms and I rode there yesterday and this morning. We actually rode Hookman twice and that root was there and not exposed. I hope can stop em before they cut it out.

If this is the same person cutting out the roots. Ive got a bad feeling they want stop anytime soon.
Did you hear the one about the guy on his death bed that said "I wish I would have worked more and rode my bike less". Said NO ONE EVER. -Jeff Scott

THis is stupid! That isn't even a drop! A tiny 1 foot drop and a guy too inexperianced digs it up! What's next? Is someone gonna take down the bridge and the jumps on humdinger?

    WHAT THE ?
We have not been able to ride the trails at PWP for like 20 years. If the trail is too hard, they should just, go back to riding the paved roads.

What I wonder is what are they using to do this? And how are the getting tools back there? Unless this is done with a handsaw -

I would say that when I ran into people doing this at Hamilton Creek, it was NEVER anyone that I knew. Always people that aren't connected to the community and don't know or care.

What mentality does this sort of garbage move? I just don't get it. If you can't ride it, then don't or get some skillz

We went out there this morning and rebuilt it and made it bigger and beefier with some rocks to help with direction and drainage control. Also corrected possible drainage issues with that line approaching the log drop. Should be smoother for sure. We ran out of time to fix some other spots on Hookman where bad lines are forming. Hopefully can get back out there next week sometime.

Just from hearing all the information I think someone walked in to mess with it. It's a short hike to the log from the 100 side next to the pond or from the road the houses are built on next to Hookman. So keep your eyes open for people walking on the trails or around the trails in the woods, these are MTB only trails. The only walking allowed is if you are walking your bike. We dont want to keep the police from doing more important things so we need to keep an eye on things at PW and other parks as well.

FYI damaging anything in any Metro park that constitutes vandalism, which that is, carries a $100+ fine for the first offense. After the 2nd offense you can be legally banned from all Metro Parks and be charged with trespassing if you return.

    PWP Unauthorized Trail Work

I'm curious if there was obvious tool marks where a shovel or something else was used to dig it out or if they had used their hands. Is it possible an animal dug it out (I know that's unlikely but it's hard for me to believe someone did this as an intentional way to try and hurt someone). Also this isn't a hard obstacle so it makes me wonder why someone was trying to remove it.

I didn't notice it tonight but I don't notice much. ;) I know someone took out that root on the climb you are talking about. Pissed me off good. That was a good little challenge after climbing. If I cannot ride something, I just walk it. Why do people have to mess with stuff that is naturally a part of mountain biking?

We are going to try to put that feature back soon but it will need to be secured better. The one that was there came loose and became a hazard. I liked it as well because it made you keep pedaling past that turn to get yourself over the log.

This one is easy. It was unauthorized changes to the trail, it's on metro property, hence by definition of the law, it's vandalism. The only way it wasn't vandalism is if whoever did it had permission from Parks to do it.

Drew - by that definition a skid could also be vandalism. Does anyone know anything other than a fallen tree had some dirt removed?

    PWP Unauthorized Trail Work

There are pics up on the Sorba fb page as well as pics of the repair. Dirt had been dug out in front of the root exposing the approach side. It used to just be flush with the ground on the approach with a drop on the backside. This had it so there was a 3-5"(guesstimating based on the pic) exposed root with an 8 inch drop on the back and it looked like it was being prepped to handsaw it out.

That's what I've extrapolated from the pics and comments anyways.
