Bike Recommendations for youth MTB racing

I have a friend here at the office whose son is about 15, and has joined his high school MTB team. He has a bike that he has about outgrown, and his dad is talking about getting him a new bike. He is not wanting to commit too much money, but just for discussion, lets say $700-$1000. He is about 5-7 now, and will likely be 5-9 full grown. I suggested maybe a 650b size, because the kid says he likes a quick handling bike. I also suggested a hard tail with the best fork that he could afford.

What do you guys think? Any used bikes out there that you know of for this boy? I love to see young folks getting into this sport in this way.

Both Cannondale and specialized have national agreements with NICA (parent organization of the high school league) to offer good discounts in their entry level bikes. Could easily get one in the price range you suggested. Have them check with their coach to get the specifics.

I think you're spot on - 27.5 hard tail with a good (air) fork. And 2x10, not 3xsomethingless. It's a good jumping in point. There are a number of good bikes out there in that price range. Shop around for sure. I'm particularly partial to Giant bikes simply because of how well they've treated me with frame warranties.

Have your buddy talk with Jay Williams over at RB's and let him know what you are looking for. The shop is one of the NICA sponsors and Katherine Williams who heads up the Tennessee League is Jay's wife. They stock Cannondale and Scott at the moment. Cannondale doesn't do a 650, but Scott does. Not sure what discounts would apply, but I know Jay will work with you. I am 5'-8" and while I still ride a FS with 26", I have had plenty of fun on 29er and 27.5 so I wouldn't get too hung up on the wheel size. Honestly at that price range I would look for a nice used 26" bike from somebody looking to finally get on some bigger wheels. Jay would be a good resource for that as well. He can tell you what to look for on Craiglist and he will even give the bike a look over if you find one that you like and make sure your not getting taken. Its all about getting you hooked so that when you think 3k is a perfectly reasonable amount of money for a bike your back at the shop.
