    Why all the spam lately?

Just wondering what happened to the website?

My guess is someone on the site picked up some spyware that a Russian group uses to find target sites, and realized this was a forum site, and started making regular visits to spam. The only real answer is to tighten up registration requirements on the forum, and being able to do that depends on features in the software, which is dependent on version, etc.

This stuff comes in waves, always has.
I'll talk to Tommy about trying to change some things up to slow it down.
I use to have the time to do preemptive strikes & ban people or bots before they even registered.
With everything, spammers & hackers have gotten smarter.
All the mods on this site are doing their best to knock them down as quick as possible.
I, like the rest of the mods have full time jobs & try to get to it as soon as we can, when we get a complaint.

As long as we don't piss off North Korea...we're doing good.

I kind of like this thread as it's now attracting all the spam. It's a one stop banning station.

I spent 15 years in IT before I got a belly full of it and walked away because I refuse to be viewed as property by the corporations that expect 24 hour on call status 365 days a year for chicken feed. I have a family to feed, and raise, and spend time with, not chickens. It's neither spam nor bull crap (that's two words). Simply an educated observation.

Question for the mods: In my experience, users flagging the spam when they come across it makes it easier to deal with (you don't have to look for it). Is that the case for you guys, or would you rather it not be flagged?

I was going to have the woman in my office, that immigrated here from Russia about 20 years ago, take a look at it. It might be a mountain biker that has something useful to say. Unfortunately, she if off until the first of the year.

This is what Google translate got out of part of the most recent post...

" The film would be better named Operation breeze !!! * * mwk, I almost fell asleep translation horror about a movie, a movie for anybody who was shooting that smoked writer * * Powerful film! Spanish lads * * Teams worked".

I'm not very worried about it being g a real person. I've banned probably 10-15 Russian spam accounts in the past 3 days.

Being old and technologically impaired, I don't get what the spammer might be getting out of posting here. Any idea(s).

    It's quite a nuisance.

This is the funnest thread on this forum in months! Keep it going!

I'm interested in Drew's story since I to work in IT, and have to be on call from time to time - but I wouldn't say I make chicken feed. More like pig slop. If you don't work in IT Drew, what do you do?

Mountain Biking is 80% mental, 40% physical, and 20% skills... and that may add up to more than 100%, but I don't know.. I hit my head on a tree this weekend.

I went back to school, and got a degree in Recording Industry Management. So I have a little studio, and I do a little work for people you'll probably never hear of, and I have a part time job working for Clarksville Parks & Rec. - where I build MTB trails for them. For chicken feed. But I'll take chicken feed to stand in the woods and not have to deal with stupid people.

Given the version of this forum the owner should look at updating the forum's software to the latest one you can as it probably has improvements to catch spammers. Not to mention the numerous security patches that have been pushed out since this current version was released.

It is always a cat and mouse game with spammers. I see spam posts all the time on old blogs, they are just robots programmed to hit widely available software packages like wordpress, vbulletin, etc... and post junk using known holes in the software. Usually trying to get people to click and install malware or other junk on their computers to gain greater access to networks (i.e Sony Entertainment) or personal information for identity theft.
