Uzzi may have to change his name ..to 5.5

After riding Joey Kachinko's Intense 5.5 at the Fat Tire Festival, I was inspired. I knew my Uzzi was intact for doing the crazy stuff, but got a little tired of getting smoked by all these guys on their light little bikes. So I had to join the light bike club, does 25lbs get me in? Just checking...

Darryl Glasscock and Sun and Ski really made this whole thing happen. They got on the phone and got a frame QUICKLY from Intense, that doesn't happen very often. It took me 4 months to get my Uzzi. Darryl got me a really good deal on all XTR parts with the Intense frame.

Nothing like opening a frame box with Intense on the side.

Darryl put most of it together and I helped where I could. Sure, I could have put most of it together, but I would have taken me 3 days.

Finally all put together. Man is it light! Still have to cut the brake cables down.and dial in the suspension, but I'm looking forward to doing some more racing.

Thanks David. I think yours is heavier because it's made out of lead? The wheels make this bike ridiculously light - even the other XTR parts and just crazy - weight savings everywhere it seems.

Purdy, it weighs what, half as much as your other bike? The only problem I see is that it should have a Pike air on the front.

Is that an RP3 or RP23?

Are you gonna hold on to the Uzzi?

    Congrats

    23 baby..

Keeping the Uzzi. It's going to be my everyday bike still, and my "I want to keep up with fast guys on light bikes" bike is the 5.5. No way I'd huck this bike.

Take a close-up of the rear derailleur - looks different. Is that a '08 XTR - the cable housing looks like it's at an odd angle.

Great looking bike. Wanted an XTR crankset when I built my Marin but could not justify the expense with the amount of riding that I do. I cannot wait to see it in person.

Just for the record - I could have never afforded to buy all these parts separately. Darryl worked out a good deal with Intense for an XTR build kit. If I went and bought the XTR cassette, that's like 200 bucks! The cranks are like 400 retail! But with the build kit you get everything XTR without the XTR price tag.

Oh D^am that's right, we're doing the deck for her.
Well, next time it's your turn right?
You've got to stay on top of these things when your married.
Keep documentation of who got what when the money was there.
We'll do the deck & then you get a new bike, right?
You got to keep tabs on the paper work or it's never going to work out for you.
Oh crap, she doesnt watch this forum does she?
    Never mind!
    Gotta' go!

Very, very nice Tim...and "FRO" to boot. I expect that you will love that ride as I have heard nothing but stellar reviews from those that I've run across.

Gotta love the new XTR Cranks...tough break on the rear der.

LOL...just gotta represent the Shimano crowd.

    Post 1st Ride Review

Hooked up with Dr. Toy and he helped me shorten my brake lines. Darryl and I got finished too late to finish up a few loose ends, so Chris helped me finish it up.

One things about Chris May (Dr. Toy) - it's amazing what an airplane engine mechanic brings to the table. Two words - "Safety Wire"

It is amazing the torque you build up pushing a 38 lbs bike around. I was flying on this bike! I rode the entire back side without much of a burn. I was out of breath a few times, but was able to keep my legs from burning. Never happens on the Uzzi. The riding position is obviously much different and that was the hardest thing to adjust to. As far as bobbing - there isn't much, it would help to learn to pedal smoother. Full Suspension can make you really sloppy sometimes, and I noticed it on a lighter bike. Having a heavier bike does have advantages - I never pick my way through a section, I usually just barrel right over it. Not on this bike. The bike is so light it tends to kick back, where the Uzzi would just roll over it.

Climbing is just ridiculous on this bike. Only once have I climbed Pinnacle sitting down on the Uzzi - this time I was in 2-2 and 2-3 no problem. Most of you are used to that, I felt like I was on another planet. I was able to go so much faster on sections that I wasn't used to going fast on. It was fun.

Rides great - need to get the suspension dialed in. Fork feels a bit harsh. Fox has so many dials, it can be overwhelming.

After a loop and a half at Hamilton Creek two big thumbs up. Looking forward to trying this on another trail.

    Oh no! Look! It's dirty!

It appears bike companies have figured a few things out - if the bike isn't going to be hucked, it can be lightweight with more travel. More travel is just really adjusting the geometry and angles, has nothing to do with weight. Long travel bikes typically weigh more because the bikes will be used for freeride. So a light long travel bike makes for a great ride and still can be fast, but can't be taking it off the triple op.

Intense and Sun & Ski should pay you a commission! If I hadn't ridden your bike at the FTF, I would have never had been so inspired! I still need to get mine dialed in. It's not at plush as yours, but it should be.

    I wouldn't doubt it.

So I have a question for you? That is a lot more travel than most XC race bikes have. So, why did you decide to go with that particular frame? And, (another one), what kind of racing was that frame built for? Is it light all mtn racer? I'm actually going to look this up right now! I know that it was probably expensive, but that just seems like a sweet blend!

Nice bike man... You cannot ride it with me, I need someone to ride and play...

Hey Daryl.... in the second pic why are you holding a pink shop rag in your Mouth?

I think I will need to inspect that in about a week...

Super D is a new type of race that you can do on a downhill bike or a long travel XC bike. Basically it's a downhill with a lot of pedalling. Enduro - like 24hr races, epic marathon races - neither of which I will do. If the travel is efficient, and the bike is light, I don't see what this bike could not be raced cross country. I'm not exactly racing expert class, so I have a light fast comfortable bike.

Don't worry Paddle, I still have a FR bike and we can go get silly when every you get back from the land of surrender. Hope you are enjoying the croissants!

Darryl, why are you holding a pink shop rag in your mouth?! Thanks for the adjustment to the road bike today. Shifts like butter now.

Dr. Toy is right. The thing is so light compared to what I am used to, it's almost a little silly. I'm afraid I'll break the thing.

His nick name is the "Gimp" actually, it's just the angle of the picture. I have some more taken at the same time that PROVE that he didn't have a rag stuffed in his mouth. Oh yeah, and I believe the color is "salmon," not pink.

Uh-oh!! Watch out sport 30-39 class!!

Tim - that's another dream-bike to add to your stable!! Love the color too. Is it sort of a flat-black, more than shiny? Whatever it is, it rocks.

Just out of curiosity, what is the blackbox dealio? Is it just this years XO? Or is it a different XO design? I know with the juicy brake systems they have the juicy 7, carbons, and ultimate. Is that similar to how the XO's work too?

Love the ride report too!! When riding the race bike for the first few times, I totally noticed that with every pedal stroke I was sort of 'bouncing'. I had experienced this while riding a hardtail after riding the 6" travel bike, too. I guess the big bikes really do make us a bit lazy in the efficiency dept!? Also - I remember the 'kick back' you spoke of too. Every root on the race bike is now an obstacle trying to slow you down, where as with the big bike, it seemed like another tiny bump in the road that could just be rolled over. Interesting stuff!!

Sweet bike! Glad you're loving it every step of the way!! One race tip - don't ride it. Ever. Don't train. Don't beat me in races. Oh, wait, I guess that was 4 tips!!?!?

Sport? They'll have to drag me kicking and screaming from beginner pal! Who has time to train for 2 laps?

Since I have been waiting for chainring bolts for the Uzzi, I've been riding the 5.5 though not really wanting to because I want to keep it nice and not destroy it at Hamilton Creek. But I've adapted and my ride yesterday I felt like my old self again. I do want to keep riding the heavier bike because it makes the 5.5 feel like I'm riding the lightest bike in the world. I would wonder why riding behind Dr. Toy he'd pull away at weird times in the trail, but that is because it was so effortless for him to pedal in that certain area and so hard for me on the heavy bike! To most of you this has been blatantly obvious for a while and just dawning on Reed and I! (I think Reed caught on a little sooner than I)
