    GPS suggestions

thinking about GPS. can't really find a reason that I REALLY need it, but why not thow away more money?

Looks to me like the Garmin 305 is the only game in town. seen 2 guys with it with mixed reviews, but i like the functionality.

what is the consensus here on the GPS? is the Garmin a good unit? are there other choices out there?

Garmin has new model coming out that adds some features such as the ability to read power from SRM, etc. Not sure that matters much for MTBing...but for road riding it would be great. You'd have to dump some cash out for a power meter as well though.

Check out this site for good prices on all things Garmin: http://www.geomangear.com/

I know we have a couple Garmin addicts on this site. I would love one myself, but I'm trying to resist the urge.

    Goodluck,

i have/had a 305. i can't seem to find it at the moment it's super cool i definately recomend it. mine has a cadence sensor which is ok but better for road riding.

get as many mounts as you have bikes though because you'll always want it with you.

i think they have models coming out that allow you to download basemaps...that would be nice (i think their called 605).

i have also had excellent dealings with garmin. droped mine and messed up the mode button...sent it back...got a new one. (also had a similar situation with a work gps)

looks like i will be buying one also.

:stupid: just remembered. powerbar.com has a $75 rebate coupon on the 305 if you sign up for their newsletter.

that's even better than the amazon.com deal. do you think the $75 off is in addition to the sites price? that might make me pull the trigger.

might even get it tonight before reason and accountability set in.
(i bounced my last rent check and had my cable shut off recently... i'm not a good decision maker)

Looks like the 705 is the newest with color screen, little bigger and heavier with maps and more wireless options. its $500-$700 though which is crazy.

I have the 305 with HR and cadence, I love the thing..

I have it set up with all my bikes so it knows which ones have the cadence sensor (easy to switch) and love all the info. I wish it had roads for the RB but hey it is way better than a regular computer.. I have also used it on many MTB rides with no signal issues. (old complaint when they first came out)

I love the ability to do a course and upload it into the computer to race myself, it is liking having a partner somedays..

As for durability I have not had any issues.. Garmin has been helpful on my only issue.. Got it real wet one day and it would not sync to the cadence sensor / had to reset the unit.. no big deal as all the info was on my computer.

If you run a Mac I would suggest getting the Ascent software it is way better than the training center for mac…

Any questions feel free to call me 615 – four two six thirty four ten

Also Go with geomangear site above, best prices and crazy CS, I e-mailed the guy with my order and told him I was going out of town on Friday and he shipped it to me overnight at no additional cost.. that is awesome, as I was only telling him so it could come latter rather than prior to me leaving, he sent me an e-mail with two hours and it was on its way..

I have the 305 w/ cadence and heart rate. Love it. It will lose singal in the woods sometimes but it still rocks. It works very well on the road bike. My favorite feature is that you can program workouts into the unit the go ride and do the workout. So if i want to do intervals it will beep when i'm suppose to change my heart rate. Last week we road the Norht/South trail and i took it along. We were riding from the north end to the south end and thinking it was easier that way but we actually gained a little altitude.

Having said all of that I don't think it was something i needed up it's kinda cool to have. I picked mine up on ebay NIB for around 260 shipped w/ heartrate and cadence.

sweet. are there a lot of folks uploading their times and routs to motionbased?

think i'll get it tonight. will give 3 more hours of thought and one check of my bank account.

one last thing... what is wrong with the 205? looks significantly cheaper but doesn't have HR or cadence.

Well I did it. Got the Garmin 305 with HR monitor (to tell me how out of shape I am) for $175 with shipping after rebate. Not bad. Thanks for the links!

In theory I should never get lost again.

THe 305 does its altimeter from barometric pressure rather than a gps data point, in other words MUCH more accurate..

    congrats on the purchase,

    Check out Bike route toaster

for you road guys, you can plot a route on your computer then upload to Motion based then make it a route on your 305 ... in other words you can design a ride upload it then follow it on your map on the 305...

From the link that GNC put up: http://www.geomangear.com/
It's like $230 or something there and they have links to the powerbar $75 rebate which is good through november. I signed up for the powerbar newsletter and it give you the rebate form.

if you don't sign up for powerbar i think you get the rebate anyway when you checkout of geomangear.com. 10 minutes after i ordered i got an email saying its shipped!

    Amazon.com has it for ~$250

Everywhere else its quite a bit pricier.

    Here is the geomangear link

I love my 305. Got all my extra pieces from GEOMAN and he's definitely got the market cornered on prices and service. I think I'll be ordering another one for the wife soon. . . She made a snide comment about how nice my bike toys are compared to hers.

    Michigan Mike, your a turd.
After seeing your post I bought one also.
Been thinking about it for awhile though.
You just made me pull the trigger.
I've only had time to go over on the green way here in the boro but, this thing is great!
Jay the geoman is a great guy to deal with.
    I recommend him highly.
As far as pedaling up hill, it will definitely tell me how slow I'm going.
