Dirt Sweat and Gears 12 Hr. Race

EDIT: Photos from the inaugural DSG Race are HERE

Also, results are HERE - at ride424.com

More great pics of the pro riders at Jeff Kerkove's Public Gallery

On April 28th, 2007 the Cotton Mill Preserve in Fayetteville, TN will be host to the inaugural Dirt Sweat & Gears. A weekend that is sure to be an epic gathering consisting of mountain biking, camaraderie and new horizons.

The headlining event for DSG is a solo and team relay 12 hour mountain bike race with a $10,000 purse up for grabs. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday and ending that night at 8 p.m. teams will compete for cash, prizes and best of all, bragging rights.

Reedly, Paddlechris, Darryl G., and I had the chance to ride this course and learn more about this event. What I can tell you is that this trail is really fun and that this event should be a really good time. This event should be part race, part festival, with vendors, food, drink, camping, and perhaps the addition of dirt jumping and even a trials competition. The huge purse will no doubt attract a few riders.

Check out the site below for more details.

    DSG Update

    All,

I just thought that I would offer an update on the Dirt, Sweat and Gears Race and Bike Festival.

Jeep has stepped up to the plate with a very generous offer to become a sponsor for this event. They are planning on making a big presence at the event and are not foreign to Mountain Biking as they have sponsored the Jeep King of the Mountain Series for the past couple years.

As I mentioned previously, USA Cycling has awarded DSG the South Eastern Region 12 Hour Mountain Bike Championship for 2007. They expect to post the updated calendar in the next couple of weeks.

The event purse of $10,000 has attracted a lot of attention among the pros and we have heard from are Tinker Juarez (Tinker will be available for a meet and greet on Friday before the race), Nat Ross, Deejay Birtch, and Monique Sawicki to name a few.

All participants will be automatically entered to win some pretty significant prizes such as:

A Lynskey Performance Level I Mountain Bike Frame from Harpeth Bikes and Lynskey.

A custom wheelset from Ligero Wheelworks.

We have also arranged for prizes and schwag from a variety of sponsors that includes such things as bike computers, wedge bags, socks, jerseys, GPS units, lights, sunglasses, hydration packs, pumps, CO2 kits, groupos, tires, etc... We expect to announce a few other prizes and raffle items in the next few weeks. Think bike frames and complete bikes!!! Our goal is that all participants leave with huge smiles and lots of gear.

The winner of the Amateur Solo Single Speed Class will win a Niner One Nine Frame from Black Sheep Cycles and Niner Bikes.

The schedule for the weekend is shaping up with camping, dinner and a movie under the stars on Friday night, a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, bike demos, a huge vendor village, a trials demonstration, two bands for the after party and awards presentation (featuring video of the race), etc...

Lot's more to come and a Huge Thank You to all who have contrubuted thus far. A special thanks goes to NMB for their support.

All I can say is WOW... sounds like this event will be much like the bigs one at the ski resorts. If you have never had the chance to see a national points series race, I wold encourage you to go.. even if you are not racing just to watch XC racers at that level makes you feel like you ride with training wheels..

Congrats Guys.. and if I can help let me know..

Planning on racing this one solo. Fortunately I have a looooong time to train. How often do you get a chance to race (get whipped by) some of the top professionals in the sport. Cant wait!!!

I wish I could make this race! It sounds like it is shaping into a GREAT race and weekend!

Unfortunately my wedding is still planned for April 28th, so I'm still not going to be able to make it.

    Chris,

You should look to enter this thing in the "corporate class". Up to ten riders. That means one lap a piece and plenty of time to just hang out and enjoy the day while still being entered to win some cool schwag.

Are you hitting this class? My problem would be finding the people to do it.. 10 would be tough..

Any group in here want to sign up for the corporate class.. one lap a piece sounds like fun..

and gives plenty of time for playing.. C

I would be in for a group ride. I rode this trail and there is NO WAY I could ride it solo for more than 4 hours. I would hurl.

I'm definitely in for a team 12 hour at Dirt Sweat and Gears. Just out of curiosity, is there a team category, and also a group category? One being more for fun, and the other 'serious' teams, etc?? Or is it just that you can have a team of however many you want, up to the limit?

I'm really excited about this as team event, but I'm worried about losing everyone to the solo class, or even the 'fun-group' category, if indeed that's how it's broken down.

    Curious, researching...

I'm in for the "serious" category. I was considering going solo, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I'm sure we can field several NMB teams with all the interest in this thread.

    Race Workers

I am thinking about being a Race Worker. Would we be eligable for any prizes? I don't see me realistically racing at this one but still want a chance for some booty.

Also, what needs to be done at the race. I am getting a new camera and wanted to shoot a ton of pics, but me and little one would love to help out.

Is there a to do list, or sign up sheet or anything?

    Steve

PS _ I might want to do the Winder Ga race on a team though
Big Caveman - 2012 Specialized Epic Expert 29er and 2006 Santacruz Superlight - custom burple color
Little Caveman - 2010 Voodoo Hoodoo 26'er - Steel is Still Real / custom build

…but on Voyage 34, he finally met himself coming down an up-staircase, and the encounter was crushing (Porcupine Tree).

    Caveman,

We would definately like some help. You should also consider riding this on a team. A team of ten means one lap per person. Figure about an hour per lap is pretty realistic.

The great thing about this event is that you can ride it to be super competitive, or you can ride it to simply have fun. I am planning on riding with a team and will probably get in just one lap early in the day prior to working the event.

Classes are as follows: two person, four person, five person co-ed, up to ten person, solo, solo ss...lots of choices here.

As Darryl mentioned, we will have a bunch more great prizes to announce in the next couple of weeks.

    Thanks,

    Grant

    Teams?

Are there any teams set up yet. I saw that there are only 20 more days to preregister. Also, what was the SORBA discount - 20 bucks?

We need another Team NMB meeting to discuss this race and the one in Winder GA

    Steve

By the way, how many are preregistered? and is what categories?
Big Caveman - 2012 Specialized Epic Expert 29er and 2006 Santacruz Superlight - custom burple color
Little Caveman - 2010 Voodoo Hoodoo 26'er - Steel is Still Real / custom build

Just thought I would clarify a few of the statements. As to whether or not the groups are fun or serious, they are all fun

All categories run three deep. The schwag will be the side of gravy whether or not you've won.

If you are a participant you are automatically entered in to the drawing for most of the goods. However, there are a few items that will go on the raffle block for a few bucks.

If you would like to volunteer, thanks in advance. Please send your contact info to: info@dirsweatandgears.com

I believe that every third Saturday of the month the trail is open to ride. It's a private trail but the owner (toochickens) has graciously opened it on these weekends for everyone to ride!!

Oh, and yep, it's hilly!! The more we learn about the different race options, the more I"m considering doing one of those 'fun teams', where we only have to do one lap!!

Haha!! 5!?! Good luck with that! I haven't even ridden the whole course yet, and everytime I leave that place my legs are done-for!!

Rick - Well, that's not 'exactly' what I was getting at - but maybe we can figure out some sort of a rental situation! LOL

A couple of us are coming down from Michigan for this race and looking forward to hopefully warmer weather. I signed up for solo class before they announced the National Ultra MTB series. I am now doing the Cohutta the week before this race so I may be interested in racing on a team instead. I would be interested in doing more than one lap though. Of course, I'm not sure how fast I'll be after Cohutta.

There could be 5 of us coming with 4 racing. At least 2 of us for sure are racing with the third for support.

    Place to stay

We plan on arriving Friday and leaving early Sunday. Any recommendations on hotels in the area?

BTW, can we set up a pit area on Friday if we are not camping?

    Nat Ross confirms DSG

Good news for Dirt, Sweat and Gears as Nat Ross confirmed earlier this week that he will be riding this event. He told us that he is ready to "throw down with Tinker." It should be a great show to watch these two old friends duke it out on the course.

We will confirm details later, but you can expect a meet and great with Nat on the Friday before the race...probably at the MOAB booth.

    Thanks,

    Grant

The staff at DSG would like to announce that beginning tonight at midnight there will be special pricing for groups consisting of 6-8 riders. Act now and save $200! That's right $200 for putting your wheels in motion and getting your team together now.

Go to DSG online registration. When checking out use code: biggroup

This offer won't last forever. As a matter of fact it ends Tuesday the 30th.

    SORBA Discount?

Is there a SORBA discount? If so, how do you apply it?

Is the SORBA table, a SORBA Mid-TN table, or a SORBA-wide table?

    Thanks.

There is a $10 Sorba Discount. We actually built and distributed an email invitation outlining this discount be sent to all Sorba Members. This went out a month ago or so.

The Sorba tent is set-up for Sorba main and Mid-TN Sorba per our conversations with Darryl Glascock and the team. We'd like to have as much involvement as possible from all chapters. We want to do everything we can to offer the Sorba cause as much attention as possible at this event.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about how we can do this.

    Thanks,

    Grant

Good to see some of the Huntsville SORBA riders down today as well as Sharp, Justin and the other area riders. The course just keeps getting better and better. With help of Kris and Kevin we'll be taking out the nasty (15-18%) climb we call Moore Hill and putting some nice technical switchbacks to make a bit more interesting. Come check it out. Also, We may be opening up riding to every second and first and fourth weekend. Stay tuned.

    toochickens,

I've sent an email about volunteering.

I can cheer Reedly on his record breaking solo race, can't I?

Tommy (T-Cat), Nick, and I had a great ride today. This was our first ride here and we were surprised at how steep this trail gets. Just enough a$$ kicking in the granny for a good day of riding. Big high five to guys working on the trail. Murfreesboro ain't that far so we will definitely be back real soon. Thanks for the fun!

I wanted to offer a reminder about Clay's offer for DSG.

Add in the Sorba discount and this is a deal.

    Thanks,

That'd be really helpful, except that there's no way in a billion years I'm racing that thing solo!! LOL

Clay, Grant - is this discount for any team? Or just the corporate team?

The current discount is for teams of 6-8. Who knows what we'll come up with next...
