Has anyone been to Defeated Creek lately? Heard that the park closes the trail from time to time and was thinking about heading out there tomorrow. Feedback?

Was out there a few weeks ago and we cleared all the trees, should be in great shape still. I haven't heard of it closing, and have never seen signage to indicate otherwise.

Weedy, but great condition this morning. One tree top blocking trail about 5 miles in. Go around is rough but passable. Did the long way up (counter-clockwise) and back down, so can't speak for the 2 mi. run-down.

Yea, I was out there last Saturday and it was all clear and super nice, there were some fresh cut trees so someone had been there recently to clear it, but the leaf cover is pretty thick in spots, easy to get off track.

Rode there this past Wednesday. Trail is great! A few branches down and got those cleared. One tree down soon after getting on the Grizzly. Easy to clear by hopping off or bunny hopping. Will need a chainsaw to get rid of it. All else is fantastic.

I was hoping to go tomorrow and would be glad to clear the tree, but with this rain, I'll wait. Thanks for the update!

Well, as it turns out, Ryan and I went after all. Cleared the downed tree and got a big loop and a little one. Primo conditions. Overgrown weeds and grasses are nonexistent. Stoked for the winter!

While riding the north side we agreed that Defeated is the most under appreciated trail in middle Tennessee, if not the whole state. If you haven't, I suggested that you get you somea this, this winter or spring, before the weeds take over again.

Homer, when you enter from the main trailhead, which direction do you guys generally ride? Counter-clockwise or clockwise? I have only ridden it 2-3 times, and I've always ridden Counter, but I have run into people coming the other direction and wondered what the best route was? The climb can be brutal during the summer (when I rode) but the downhill more than makes up for it.

We usually do it both ways, counter clockwise 1st then flip it. I love it both ways, but once you get past the first 2 miles of climbing going clockwise, you can get some crazy flow coming back down. Really fun stuff.

Love the climb counter clockwise. It just keeps going!

We ordinarily do it counter. Ryan is sick. I do not love the climbing. I love the go-down after. I will agree that the clockwise go-down has great flow. Often what we'll do is counter to the top, then back down for a 14 mi. ride. Ryan talked about doing two counter loops next time. I want to puke just thinking about it. After a loop, ascending clockwise to the top then back down is fun. I'll probably have to do the 2-loop, in prep for a Pinhotti trip at the first of the year. It's a fantastic trail, but the gut-buster climb at mi. 6.5 psychs me out.

Weekend before last. Cleared the one tree and in primo condition. Would be better now. I HOPE to go tomorrow, before the rain, but may not make it. Go if you have the opportunity!

Got 2+ laps in today. Trail in great shape. I moved several smaller trees. However, there was one tree down in the beginner section. One other tree on the trail on the fast downhill (after the rock drops halfway down). I was able to scoot it up the trail some but it would be nice if it were cut a little shorter.

Had the pleasure to ride this trail this past Saturday. All I can say is if you haven't been here, do yourself a favor and try to check it out soon. This trail is great. It is probably my new favorite trail in Middle TN. I really wish it was a bit closer to Mboro but I will making trips out there more often now. It's fantastic!

Similar soils as Lock 4, just less traffic. I saw this morning that H'ville got 2 1/2" in the last few days. The trail will probably be rideable, but all of the off-camber with roots will make it sketchy with any speed. The steep switchbacks will be very slick.

I'd go, but just replaced a broken chain and found out Thursday that the worn cassette isn't dealing with the new one very well. Waiting on new cassette and ring. Ryan may want to go!

I would avoid Defeated Creek. It just thawed out and got about an inch of rain a few hours ago. But if mud is your thing, go for it. We went one time when it was thawing and it was really bad. The worst was the middle elevation soils.

Agree, they get some pretty bad run off at a few of the steeper spots and the natural erosion isn't helped along by wet riding. There are some good sections with pine needles that dry or stay in good condition, but I'd put this trail in the middle when it comes to being ready after any rain...meaning, give it 24-36 hours minimum.

I rode it on Jan 1, based on the conditions that day and the weather since then I would bet that it's pretty messy from the thawing and new rain.

With the threat of rain, I rode a clockwise lap, thinking that the steep, upper switchbacks might be slick. As it turns out, most was in fine shape. A few heaved, damp areas on a couple of corners near the hiking trail (no tire pick-up), but the rest of the assent and desent was good. The only areas where it got sloppy were the lowest north side traverse and the section running along the road. Water has washed leaves (I first thought it was deer and/or turkey scratching) onto the trail such that at many locations the trail is undecernable, particularly the upper loop. Wound up off of it a couple of times. I couldn't see that anyone had ridden it lately, The lower loop has had some recent use. Cleared 8 or so limbs and trees off of the upper, so the trail is all clear. Last night's rain has put it out of commission for a while, but it should be good in a few days if the sun comes out.
